Sails are set: New Vendée Globe Qualification Race in July

After the Corona-related cancellation of the two Atlantic regattas from France to New York and back again, the IMOCA class is now presenting a new variant as a qualification for the Vendée Globe: Vendée-Arctic-Les Sables d’Olonne.

DMG MORI Sailing Team

The Route Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne runs from the French coast west of Iceland and north of the Azores. This will be a solo race taking the sailors up past Iceland and into the Arctic Circle and then down to the Azores with a return to the start location planned around ten to twelve days later. The start is planned for the 4th July. This Atlantic race organized by the IMOCA will act as the sole qualification of the Vendée Globe for skipper Kojiro Shiraishi.

In order to take place, the Vendée-Arctic-Les Sables d'Olonne has to adapt to the public health situation. Focus is on the race itself, safety and 100% digital communication. Therefore there will be no Race Village at the start and no reception for the general public. The sailors will be invited to make their way directly to the start line from their home port without stopping at a pontoon. Before the start the sailors will have to take a blood test and put themselves into self-isolation for five days.
